How Ketamine Therapy Works
Ketamine is an anesthetic medication that acts in part through the brain’s glutamate system. Clinical research has found rapid antidepressant effects in some patients with treatment-resistant depression, while research into its use for chronic pain and other psychiatric conditions continues to evolve. Use of IV ketamine for psychiatric conditions is off-label.
Research has evaluated IV ketamine as an off-label treatment option for some patients whose depressive symptoms have not adequately responded to standard treatments.

Important Treatment Information:
Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. ¹ The use of IV ketamine for depression and chronic pain is off-label and is not an FDA-approved indication for ketamine injection. Treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Potential benefits, risks, alternatives and expected outcomes should be discussed with a qualified medical provider.
FDA’s 2026 Ketalar label lists anesthesia indications, and FDA has specifically stated that ketamine itself is not FDA-approved for psychiatric disorders. (FDA Access Data)
